Richard Shimell started printmaking late in life. After a career in journalism, he joined the Dartington Print Workshop as a complete beginner in 2010. He says it was a steep learning curve, but he stuck at it and eventually started selling his prints. He became a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in 2016.

Richard lives in a wooded landscape on the edge of Dartmoor, surrounded by trees. He is drawn to the simplicity of silhouettes and the complexity of branches.

He enjoys all stages of the making process, from drawing to carving to printing, and has a small studio at home with his own Hawthorn press.

At the start of this year I promised myself I would make whatever I fancied and stop thinking over commercially, otherwise things risked getting stale.  This print is a product of that. I wanted to portray mistiness and a view from the top of my four-storey house. I hadn’t made a reduction linocut for a long time and wanted to see if the method would fit the image. It’s ‘soaring above’ in several senses – me flying up and away from what I usually make, trying new methods and approaches, made in the early days of the pandemic when I was already worried about what would happen, and it’s the view from high above the valley in which I live.”  Richard Shimell
